I gave a talk a few weeks ago at a place called
The English Room, a language school in Leipzig. Below is a link to the mp3 and the slides. Not the best quality, but it works. Also, there are 28 funny pauses throughout the talk, which is when I had to manually walk to the computer and press next on the slide-show. If you follow along with the slides, this is your cue to go to the next one.

If anyone out there in the universe gives it a listen, I'd love to hear feedback, positive or negative.
Really good talk! Well thought out in the details, but put it all very simply. Covered all the main bases in the current discussion with a nice logical flow. And you last 'big point' was a really good ending to it all. Made me want to consider the Christian faith!
ReplyDeleteDid you get much discussion afterwards, or any disagreement with your definition of science?
I did a talk on science not too long ago (although, with a slightly different focus) but I think yours was better than mine.
It also annoys me when atheists claim their position is not a belief. Aghh!
A couple of small points: I think you said at one point that there were two things you were going to mention. One was the God of the gaps point, but I can't remember you ever saying what the second thing was. Maybe I missed it, but it left me hanging, and I wasn't sure if you were covering it with out me knowing. This is only a small point.
Another thing, you said (towards the end) that this God (he or she) must speak the truth. I wondered if people would want you to substantiate that a bit more. But I really loved your bold claim that religion trumps science (well argued). It may have also been helpful to point out that there probably won't be a conflict however.
These are only very small points and take nothing away from it's good points.
I would seriously consider putting what you said into a small booklet and giving it away at Christmas time - especially with your qualification to speak on this topic.
Hope your family are well and especially little Theodore (great name BTW). have a restful and pleasantly reflective Christmas break.
Hey thanks heaps Simon, very helpful comments. Also thankyou to everyone who emailed me privately, I really appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteThe second point was the claim that faith is a blind-leap type of thing. I wasn't composed enough to do the seguays properly, so there werea few confusing points I think.
The discussions afterward were encouraging. I have had lots of feedback, and various encouraging bits and pieces have come from it. I don't want to say anything in such a public way though.
So yeah, thanks heaps.
